By The Numbers
These numbers are inclusive of deaths for this year’s report as collected by The National Center for Transgender Equality through November 8, 2023. In order to fully recognize every person’s identity, where someone identified as more than one race or ethnicity, they are counted in both categories separately.
Because of the deeply ingrained structural and institutional racism and transphobia that informs the criminal justice system in the US and many countries, deaths in custody, executions by the state, and deaths resulting directly from law enforcement involvement are categorized as acts of violence. Deaths that are being investigated or are otherwise suspicious are also categorized as violent. Deaths where the cause has been ruled or reliably suspected as nonviolent but details are not released are categorized as nonviolent.
