Kiara was known as “a prominent activist for the rights of transgender people and those living with HIV, particularly low-income Black and Latine trans women in New York.” She co-founded New York Transgender Advocacy Group (NYTAG) in 2014. The organization played a major role in the long fight to finally pass New York State’s Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA), which in 2019 added gender identity as a protected class in New York State in housing, employment, and public accommodations.
